Get Involved / Mahi tahi

You don't have to work in tech to care about how AI lands here.

Join the team

If you have expertise in AI, policy, law, education, or advocacy, we'd love to talk. We're especially looking for people grounded in local communities.

Contribute writing

Share your thinking - a case study, an explainer, a response to a current AI issue affecting New Zealanders. Technical expertise is welcome but not required.

Spread the word

Help us reach parents, teachers, journalists, and MPs. Share our work, speak to your networks, or cite us in your own.

Give feedback

Tell us what's unclear, what's missing, or what you'd like to see us cover. The best ideas come from readers.

Volunteer tasks

Specific ways to help, right now

These are bounded, task-based roles you can pick up without a big time commitment. Each one has a clear deliverable and a rough time estimate, so you know exactly what you're signing up for. Tap a role to see the detail.

Aotearoa Media & Tech Roundup Writer Compile a monthly digest of New Zealand AI news for our mailing list. ~2–3 hrs / month

What you'll do

Once a month, scan New Zealand news (RNZ, Stuff, Newsroom, The Post, NZ Herald) for domestic AI developments: new tools being rolled out by NZ businesses or government agencies, policy shifts, notable local stories. Pull together 5 to 7 items for our mailing list, each with a short paragraph covering what happened and why it's worth knowing about, plus a link to the source. You'll also write up a short update on what AISA itself has been working on that month, from a few notes we send you.

What good looks like

A roundup that feels worth opening an email for: factual, easy to read, and genuinely useful for someone trying to keep track of how AI is showing up in their own country. Not opinion or commentary, just what happened, why it matters, and enough context that someone unfamiliar with the story can follow it. We'll give you a short brief on what counts as in scope, plus a couple of example roundups to work from.

Who this suits

Anyone who reads NZ news regularly and can spot when a story has an AI angle. No writing background required, just good judgment on what's worth including.

Email [email protected] with a line or two on why this interests you.

AI Jargon Explained Writer Explain one AI term at a time, in plain English, grounded in a New Zealand context. Flexible · ~1 term / 1–2 wks

What you'll do

Take an AI term from our list (or suggest your own) and produce two things for it: a plain-English entry for the AI Jargon Explained page on our website, and a short script for a video explainer, which we'll record ourselves. The page entry gives the term, a clear definition, and a New Zealand-grounded example. The script follows a simple four-part structure: hook, term, plain definition, NZ grounding, then a handoff line. We'll give you existing entries and scripts as examples so you're never starting from a blank page.

What good looks like

Writing that explains the term without talking down to the reader, uses a real or realistic NZ example, and matches its tone to how serious the term actually is. No fearmongering, no unexplained jargon, no em dashes. The page entry is written to be read, the script is written to be read aloud, so the two should feel a little different even when covering the same term.

Who this suits

Someone who enjoys explaining things clearly, whether or not you have a technical background. Understanding the term matters more than technical expertise. Comfort writing both for the page and for a script is useful, but we're happy to guide you through the difference.

Email [email protected] with a term you'd be excited to tackle, or ask us to assign one.

Social Media Graphic Designer Turn our published work into clean, on-brand graphics and carousels. ~1–1.5 hrs / week

What you'll do

Turn already-published AISA content (jargon explainers, blog posts, Incident Tracker entries, facts from our research) into graphics and carousels for Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. We'll provide Canva templates in AISA's brand style, so this is about applying a template well, not designing from scratch. When there isn't new content to draw from, we'll give you a running list of standalone facts and stats to use instead.

What good looks like

Clean, on-brand graphics that are easy to read at a glance and accurately reflect the source content. We do a quick visual check each week, since the content itself has already been reviewed before it reached you.

Who this suits

Anyone comfortable in Canva with a good eye for clean, readable design. No original writing involved, this role is about production, not messaging.

Email [email protected] with a couple of examples of graphic or carousel work you've done before, even informal ones.
